Profile
Karanga Camp is a well-equipped group facility located in the Waitākere Ranges at Bethells Beach, just 25 km from Auckland’s CBD. Surrounded by native bush and close to natural attractions such as Lake Wainamu, Cascade Kauri Park and Te Henga (Bethells Beach), the camp provides schools with an excellent base for outdoor education and nature-based learning.
The camp can accommodate up to 72 people across cabins and additional hall space. Four cabin blocks each have two rooms, most sleeping seven and one sleeping five, providing a total of 54 beds. A further 18 beds are available in three hallway rooms. For larger groups, the spacious main hall (17m × 11m) can also be used as a dormitory or as an activity and meeting space.
Facilities are designed with schools and large groups in mind. A commercial-grade kitchen is fully equipped with a six-element stove and oven, fan-forced oven, commercial steriliser, double-door fridge and freezer, along with crockery, cutlery, pots and pans. Groups need only bring their own tea towels and cleaning supplies. A large dining area connects to the hall, making mealtimes and indoor activities easy to organise.
Outdoor space is another highlight of Karanga Camp. Two open playing fields are available for sport, games and group activities, while nearby tracks provide access to native bush walks. Within a short distance, schools can plan activities at Lake Wainamu, the sand dunes, or Bethells Beach, offering options for swimming, tramping and environmental studies.
Karanga Camp is available for schools, youth groups, retreats and community organisations. A booking calendar and contact details are available on the camp’s website, with a minimum charge and bond applying to group stays.
Karanga Camp combines comfort, practicality and access to outstanding natural surroundings, making it a strong choice for schools planning their next camp.
