Profile
Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre (APOEC) is a purpose-built facility in the heart of Arthur’s Pass National Park. Owned and operated by The Kind Foundation, it provides schools with a unique opportunity to combine outdoor education with one of New Zealand’s most dramatic alpine environments.
The centre can accommodate school groups in bunk-style accommodation with comfortable facilities for students and teachers. A well-equipped kitchen and dining hall make group catering easy, while indoor teaching spaces provide areas for lessons, workshops and reflection. The location, surrounded by mountains, bush and rivers, ensures that students are immersed in nature from the moment they arrive.
Programmes at APOEC are designed to support the New Zealand curriculum and can be tailored to different age levels and learning goals. Activities include tramping, navigation, alpine ecology, environmental studies, river safety and team-building challenges. Each experience is hands-on and encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones, developing confidence, resilience and cooperation.
A strong emphasis is placed on safety, with all activities led by experienced instructors who provide guidance and risk management throughout. Teachers are supported with structured programmes and resources that link directly to classroom learning, making planning straightforward and outcomes measurable.
The alpine setting also makes APOEC a valuable place for environmental education. Students gain a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s unique ecology, conservation challenges and the importance of kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land). The experience fosters a respect for nature that stays with students long after camp.
For schools looking for a camp that blends adventure, curriculum-based learning and environmental awareness, Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre is an excellent choice. It provides students with transformative experiences in a setting that inspires bot
