Located near Lewis Pass in North Canterbury, the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre (BROEC) has been delivering outdoor programmes for schools and youth groups for more than 45 years. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and beech forest, the centre provides an inspiring alpine base for learning, challenge, and discovery.
BROEC specialises in tailored outdoor education programmes designed to meet the needs of schools, community groups, and organisations. Their approach uses adventure-based learning to encourage teamwork, leadership, reflection, and personal growth, while also fostering environmental awareness and a strong sense of place.
A wide range of programmes are offered, including Potential Leaders courses, parent–child camps, and approved Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journeys for Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. Each programme can be customised to suit curriculum outcomes, group goals, and student abilities. Activities may involve tramping, river crossings, navigation, high and low ropes, camping, and environmental studies, all led by qualified instructors.
Facilities at Boyle include a 70-bed lodge with a large kitchen and dining area, making it ideal for multi-day school camps. The centre also supports trampers and Te Araroa walkers with secure parking, parcel storage, shuttle services, and camping facilities, offering added flexibility for groups planning extended journeys.
Safety is central to every programme. Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre is registered with WorkSafe NZ as an Adventure Activity Operator, holds AdventureMark certification, and employs NZOIA-qualified instructors. Schools and boards of trustees can be confident that all activities are supported by robust safety systems and professional guidance.
