Dingleburn Station is a high country property on the shores of Lake Hāwea, offering schools a chance to experience life and learning in a working farm environment. With its combination of rugged landscapes, lakefront setting, and authentic farm activities, it provides a base for education outside the classroom that connects directly with New Zealand’s rural heritage.
One of the highlights for groups is the guided farm experience. Students can see first-hand how a large sheep and beef station operates. The tour may include mustering, travelling by 4WD to check stock, feeding animals, a woolshed tour, and watching the farm dogs at work. This gives students insight into farming practices and the skills needed to manage livestock in challenging conditions.
Dingleburn also offers access to a wide range of outdoor activities. Walking and tramping trails cross the property, leading to views of the mountains and lake that surround the station. For those interested in recreation on the water, fishing opportunities are available for rainbow trout, brown trout, and chinook salmon in the nearby rivers and lake. Mountain biking is another option, with routes that include a 30 kilometre station track, Department of Conservation trails, and additional riding areas.
The station environment itself provides a natural classroom. Students can explore the flats or relax by the lakeshore, learning about the ecology of the region and the realities of living in a remote high country location.
Because of its location, groups should be prepared for limited or no mobile coverage and understand that hazards such as weather, river crossings, vehicles, and livestock require care. The station notes that emergency response may be delayed due to its remoteness.
For schools seeking authentic high country experiences, Dingleburn Station offers a blend of farm life, outdoor adventure, and natural discovery.
