Profile
Ōkataina Outdoor Education Centre is located 30 kilometres from Rotorua, set in total seclusion and surrounded by 4,500 hectares of native bush and walkways. With access to Lake Ōkataina and a peaceful natural setting, the centre provides schools with a safe and focused environment for education outside the classroom.
The centre has accommodation for up to 91 people in main dormitories, making it suitable for class groups or whole year levels. Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, freezer, and storeroom, a dining and meeting room, and two study rooms. A separate toilet block with hot and cold showers is also available, ensuring groups have everything they need during their stay.
Schools visiting Ōkataina Outdoor Education Centre can build their own programmes around the variety of opportunities on site. Nearly one hectare of open land is available for team building and group activities. The surrounding bush and walkways are ideal for exploring native flora and fauna, while glow worm sightings and wildlife encounters add to the experience. Water-based activities are also possible, with swimming and kayaking available on Lake Ōkataina. Nearby heritage walks and bike trails provide further options for outdoor learning.
The centre is described by schools as a safe, comfortable place that feels like “a home away from home.” With no cell phone coverage, students and teachers are encouraged to disconnect from distractions and immerse themselves fully in the camp experience.
School groups are the primary focus during term time, while weekends and school holidays are open to other organisations. This ensures schools have dedicated access to the facilities and natural setting during the week.
Ōkataina Outdoor Education Centre offers schools a unique opportunity to combine learning, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences in an untouched natural environment.
