Profile
Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is a volunteer organisation and charity that has been protecting lives on our beaches for more than a century. With over 70 clubs nationwide, it gives people of all ages the opportunity to get involved in surf safety, sport and community service while enjoying the outdoors.
Young members often begin through Junior Surf (Nippers), a programme for ages 5–13 that introduces children to the ocean in a fun, safe and structured way. They learn the basics of surf safety, develop swimming skills and take part in games and activities that build confidence in the water. From there, many progress into lifeguard training, where they gain qualifications in first aid, rescue techniques and leadership.
The organisation also runs a strong surf sports programme, with local, regional and national competitions offering members the chance to challenge themselves in a wide range of disciplines. These events promote fitness, resilience and teamwork, while fostering friendships across the surf lifesaving community.
Surf Life Saving is about more than patrolling the beaches. Members are part of a movement that values service, leadership and the safety of others. By giving their time as volunteer lifeguards, they help keep millions of beachgoers safe each summer while building skills that are useful in all areas of life.
Whether joining as a child in Junior Surf, training to become a lifeguard, or taking part in surf sport, SLSNZ provides pathways for every age group. It’s an organisation that combines outdoor adventure with community spirit, offering rewarding experiences that build strong, capable and caring people.
