TOPEC in New Plymouth delivers fully facilitated outdoor education programmes for schools, with options tailored for both primary/intermediate and secondary students. Their programmes are aligned with the New Zealand curriculum and provide opportunities for personal development, leadership, and NCEA assessment where appropriate.
For younger students, TOPEC offers introductory experiences in river safety, kayaking, abseiling, climbing, tramping, and environmental studies. These activities are designed to build confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation of the outdoors in a safe and supportive setting.
Secondary programmes extend these skills with more challenging pursuits such as white-water rafting, advanced climbing, caving, bush survival, and leadership training. Courses are structured to encourage resilience, problem-solving, and cooperation, while providing practical links to curriculum outcomes and assessment opportunities.
All activities are led by qualified instructors, with a strong focus on safety and education outside the classroom. Schools can choose from day trips or multi-day residential camps, making use of TOPEC’s lodge-style accommodation and on-site facilities. The centre’s location near the Waiwhakaiho River and Mount Taranaki offers a diverse natural environment for both land and water-based learning.
TOPEC is a long-standing provider of outdoor education in Taranaki, trusted by schools across the region and beyond. Its programmes challenge students physically and mentally, helping them discover strengths, grow as leaders, and connect with the outdoors in meaningful ways.
