Profile
Education Outdoors New Zealand (EONZ) is a national organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting outdoor learning. Through resources, training and advocacy, EONZ helps schools, kura and community groups deliver high-quality outdoor education that encourages growth, wellbeing and connection with the environment.
The organisation works with teachers, educators and youth leaders to integrate outdoor learning into the curriculum. EONZ provides professional development, teaching resources and guidance to ensure outdoor programmes are safe, inclusive and effective. This support helps schools create meaningful experiences, whether it’s a day trip in the local environment, an overnight camp or a multi-day expedition.
EONZ emphasises the value of learning beyond the classroom. Outdoor education provides opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving and resilience, while also fostering a sense of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) for Aotearoa’s natural environment. Students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, discover their potential and gain a deeper connection to the land, water and people around them.
The organisation also plays an important role in advocating for outdoor learning nationally. It works with government agencies, iwi, schools and community partners to ensure that outdoor education remains a strong and accessible part of young people’s learning journeys. Safety, inclusivity and cultural responsiveness are key priorities in all its programmes and resources.
For schools and groups seeking support in planning camps or outdoor education activities, EONZ is a valuable resource. Whether developing a new programme or strengthening existing practices, the organisation offers expertise and practical tools to help educators create safe, enriching and memorable outdoor learning experiences for students.
