Profile
The Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre in Leigh provides schools with an engaging and interactive way to explore New Zealand’s first marine reserve. Run by the University of Auckland, the centre gives students the opportunity to learn about marine life, ecosystems and conservation in a hands-on environment.
Education programmes are designed to support the New Zealand curriculum and can be adapted for a range of year levels. Inside the centre, students can explore interactive exhibits, touch tanks and multimedia displays that make complex marine science accessible and fun. Knowledgeable staff and marine biologists guide groups through the exhibits, answering questions and encouraging curiosity about the underwater world.
One of the highlights of a school visit is the chance to see marine life up close. The touch tanks feature species such as starfish, sea cucumbers and hermit crabs, giving students a safe and memorable way to interact with the ocean. The displays also showcase fish, invertebrates and habitats found in the surrounding Goat Island Marine Reserve.
The centre encourages schools to combine an indoor visit with outdoor exploration. Goat Island’s rocky shoreline and protected waters provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling, rock-pooling and observing marine species in their natural habitat. These experiences help reinforce classroom learning about biodiversity, ecology and sustainability.
Safety and educational value are top priorities. Programmes are delivered in a structured, age-appropriate way, ensuring students learn while staying safe. Teachers are provided with pre-visit information and resources to link the experience directly to curriculum outcomes.
For schools planning camps or day trips in the Auckland or Northland regions, the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre offers a unique opportunity to combine science learning with outdoor adventure. It is a venue that inspires curiosity and fosters respect for New Zealand’s marine
