Learn to Surf, based at Scarborough Beach in Sumner, Christchurch, offers surf lessons, coaching, and rentals for all ages and skill levels—from complete beginners to advanced surfers. Led by Aaron Lock, one of New Zealand’s most experienced surfing and bodyboarding instructors, Learn to Surf provides a friendly, safe, and professionally guided experience in the water.
Their signature Learn to Surf package is a lively two-hour session designed to quickly introduce students to the fundamentals of surfing, with a focus on fun and confidence-building in gentle peeling waves that are perfect for beginners. For more advanced groups, lessons can be taken at nearby beaches that offer more challenging surf conditions.
Learn to Surf also supports schools with tailored educational programmes. These include the Surf Safe primary school curriculum, secondary school PE surf lessons for Years 11–13, and one-off surf days for school groups. Equipment hire is also available, with more than 50 surfboards and wetsuits suitable for all abilities. Bodyboarding lessons and gear hire are also offered, giving schools flexibility in how they structure their surf experiences.
Lessons and hires run year-round, with group sessions, private coaching, after-school classes, and winter equipment hire available through The Surf Locker. Learn to Surf is an approved Surfing New Zealand and Water Safety New Zealand school, ensuring that all lessons meet high teaching and safety standards.
