Profile
Orohaki Education Centre, owned and operated by Riccarton High School, is a secluded lodge and outdoor learning venue set in the foothills of Canterbury’s Southern Alps. Surrounded by native bush, rivers and mountains, it provides schools and youth groups with a peaceful yet adventurous environment for camps, retreats and education outside the classroom.
The centre accommodates up to 40 people in comfortable bunk-style rooms, with additional space available for larger groups by arrangement. Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas, and spaces that can be used for lessons, workshops or group activities. The setting encourages a strong sense of community, with shared meals and group activities forming an important part of the camp experience.
Outdoor education is at the heart of Orohaki Education Centre. The surrounding environment provides access to tramping tracks, river study opportunities, bushcraft and team-building challenges. Programmes can be tailored to suit the needs of schools, combining curriculum-linked learning with adventure-based activities that help students develop confidence, resilience and teamwork.
The centre’s natural setting also lends itself to environmental education and sustainability projects. Students can learn about the native flora and fauna, explore ecological themes and take part in activities that encourage kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land). The peaceful location makes it equally suitable for wellbeing-focused camps, leadership training and cultural learning experiences.
Managed with a strong focus on providing safe, inclusive and supportive experiences, Orohaki Education Centre helps schools deliver meaningful education outside the classroom. Teachers and leaders are supported with facilities and guidance that make planning straightforward, whether for a short overnight stay or a multi-day camp.
For schools looking for a venue that blends comfort with authentic outdoor adventure, Oroha
