Profile
The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) is a disciplined, uniformed youth organisation for ages 13–19, with Year 9 students able to join from age 12. It provides military-based leadership, skill development and personal growth through structured training programmes modelled on the New Zealand Defence Force.
The NZCF is made up of three branches, each aligned with a different arm of the NZDF. The Air Training Corps is modelled on the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the New Zealand Cadet Corps follows the traditions of the Army, and the Sea Cadet Corps is aligned with the Royal New Zealand Navy. Each branch has its own curriculum, uniforms and structure, giving young people a clear sense of identity while providing a wide variety of opportunities.
Cadets follow a four-year training programme supported by unit, area and national courses that develop specialist skills and qualifications. Activities include drill, adventure training, outdoor challenges, leadership exercises and community service. These experiences foster resilience, teamwork and confidence, preparing cadets for both service and civilian life.
The organisation’s mission is to develop self-disciplined, confident and responsible young New Zealanders. Its vision of preparing tomorrow’s leaders is guided by four core values: Courage, Commitment, Comradeship and Integrity. Every cadet and leader upholds a strict Code of Conduct, ensuring that the organisation maintains high standards of behaviour and respect.
Jointly funded by the Chief of Defence Force and nationally recognised civilian support organisations, NZCF is a non-profit movement supported by volunteers and communities. For young people interested in adventure, leadership and service, the Cadet Forces offer a unique pathway to challenge themselves, gain life skills and build friendships that last well beyond their cadet years.
