Profile
PÅhatu Penguins, based on Banks Peninsula near Akaroa, offers schools unique outdoor education experiences that combine conservation, adventure and curriculum-linked learning. As guardians of the largest Australasian little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand, the team provides students with opportunities to explore wildlife and ecosystems in a hands-on way.
Programmes can be structured as half-day, full-day or multi-day experiences, making them easy to integrate into school camps or EOTC programmes. Activities include guided field trips to the penguin colony, sea-kayaking safaris, bush and coastal hikes, and 4WD discovery tours through the rugged Banks Peninsula landscape. Each activity is designed to immerse students in nature while encouraging teamwork, resilience and outdoor skills.

Farm visits and sustainability-focused learning add another layer, helping students see the links between conservation, land use and community.
The programmes support a range of curriculum areas, including science, social studies, PE, technology and environmental education. Teachers can work with the PÅhatu team to adapt activities to learning outcomes, ensuring each group gets maximum value from their visit.
With a group capacity of around 50 students, PÅhatu Penguins offers an intimate and highly interactive experience. Students come away not only with new knowledge of wildlife and ecosystems, but also with stronger teamwork skills and a greater sense of responsibility toward the environment.
