Profile
St John Youth is one of New Zealand’s longest-running youth organisations, giving young people the chance to learn first aid, leadership and life skills in a fun, supportive environment. With divisions located across the country, the programme is open to ages 6–18 and is guided by trained volunteer leaders who are passionate about developing confident, capable young New Zealanders.
The programme is structured into age-based sections: Penguins (6–8 years), Cadets (8–18 years) and Youth Leaders for those ready to step up and take on more responsibility. Each stage offers progressive learning and experiences, from basic first aid and health education through to leadership development and community service. Members take part in regular training nights, competitions and camps, giving them opportunities to build friendships while putting their skills into practice.
St John Youth places a strong emphasis on service to the community. Young people are encouraged to volunteer at public events, support local projects and promote wellbeing within their communities. Along the way, they gain valuable experience in teamwork, responsibility and caring for others — qualities that stay with them long after their time in the programme.
Beyond the skills and service opportunities, St John Youth is also about fun. Camps, social events and national competitions allow members to connect with others from around New Zealand, share experiences and celebrate their achievements. For those who want to go further, there are pathways into leadership roles and even careers in healthcare or emergency services.
By combining practical training with community involvement, St John Youth creates an environment where young people can thrive. It’s a programme that equips them with skills for life, develops future leaders and inspires them to make a positive difference.
