Profile
Berwick Lodge is one of two camps operated by the Otago Youth Adventure Trust, dedicated to supporting school-based outdoor education in a safe and well-resourced environment. Set in a rural location surrounded by bush and farmland, the lodge provides students with the space to step out of their comfort zones, try new challenges, and grow in confidence.
The camp works in close partnership with schools to design programmes that align with learning goals and group needs. Activities are facilitated by trained volunteers who bring experience, encouragement, and enthusiasm to every programme. Options include a purpose-built confidence course, abseiling, mountain biking, bivvy building, and other hands-on, practical challenges. These activities are designed to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience, helping students develop valuable skills while enjoying the outdoors.
Facilities at Berwick Lodge support both short and extended stays. The camp features bunk-style accommodation, a fully equipped kitchen and dining hall, and indoor spaces that can be used for group meetings, reflection, or wet-weather activities. Outdoor areas provide plenty of room for recreation, environmental exploration, and team challenges.
The Trust’s approach is values-based, placing an emphasis on cooperation, responsibility, and personal development. Every activity is designed to encourage participation and inclusion, ensuring students of all abilities can take part and benefit. Safety is a cornerstone of the programme, with structured support systems in place to ensure each group is well cared for throughout their stay.
With its strong reputation, comprehensive facilities, and dedicated volunteer support, Berwick Lodge offers schools an ideal base for outdoor education in Otago. It is a camp where students can build confidence, strengthen relationships, and take away experiences that contribute to both personal growth and lifelong learning.
