Gisborne’s warm climate, long surf coastline, and the remote Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera area inland give the region a strong but distinctly different mix of water and land options compared with better-known parts of the North Island.

What Gisborne Suits

Water activities benefit from Gisborne’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s strongest surf regions (Wainui Beach in particular is well known nationally) making it well suited to programmes run through experienced local surf providers. For calmer paddling, sheltered sections of the Turanganui River and harbour area suit flatwater kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding better than the exposed open coast.

Tramping and multi-day expeditions have a genuine highlight in Lake Waikaremoana, in Te Urewera: one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, with a well-established multi-day circuit well suited to senior groups working toward the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award (see our Multi-Day Tramping and Expedition Skills guide), alongside more accessible day walks closer to Gisborne city itself.

Seasonality and Weather

Gisborne is one of the sunnier regions in New Zealand, with a mild climate that supports water-based activity across a longer season than further south: summer through autumn (December–April) is particularly reliable. As with the wider East Coast, the region carries more exposure to ex-tropical cyclone remnants in late summer and early autumn, so build weather contingency into any coastal itinerary during that window.

Getting There

Gisborne city is the natural base for coastal activities, while Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera sit roughly 1.5–2 hours’ drive inland on winding roads: allow more travel time than the distance alone suggests, and confirm current road conditions before a multi-day trip into Te Urewera.

Local Considerations

Te Urewera has a distinct legal and cultural status (it’s no longer a national park in the conventional sense but is recognised as a legal entity in its own right under an agreement with Ngāi Tūhoe) worth framing for students as more than just a scenic backdrop. Gisborne’s more remote road network also means mobile coverage can be patchy in places, so confirm communications planning specifically for any inland leg of a trip.
