Southland’s Catlins coastline, the Takitimu and Hokonui ranges, and its position as gateway to Fiordland and the Hump Ridge Track give schools genuine land and water options, within one of New Zealand’s more distinctly cool, changeable climates.
What Southland Suits
Tramping and bush walks are well served by the Catlins’ coastal forest tracks and the Hokonui and Takitimu ranges, offering a range of day-walk options: see our Tramping and Bush Walks guide. More ambitious senior groups can look toward the Hump Ridge Track, one of New Zealand’s newer Great Walks, or the wider Fiordland network further north-west, for genuine multi-day expeditions (see our Multi-Day Tramping and Expedition Skills guide), though Fiordland’s terrain and weather demand serious preparation and experienced leadership.
Water activities work well along the sheltered stretches of the Catlins coast and on inland lakes such as Lake Manapouri, for calmer kayaking and canoeing: the open Southland coast itself is considerably more exposed and better suited to observation than paddling.
Seasonality and Weather
Southland has a distinctly cooler, more changeable climate than most of New Zealand, with a genuine subantarctic influence: weather here can shift quickly regardless of season, and daylight hours in winter are noticeably shorter than further north. Summer through early autumn (December–March) is the most reliable window for both tramping and water activities; alpine and Fiordland routes carry real snow and avalanche risk outside this window and need specialist judgement.
Getting There
Invercargill is the natural base for most Southland activities, with the Catlins around an hour east and Fiordland access points (via Te Anau) a longer drive north-west: treat a Fiordland-based programme as its own separate logistics exercise rather than a day trip from Invercargill.
Local Considerations
Southland’s weather can change faster than forecasts suggest, particularly toward Fiordland: build conservative contingency time into any itinerary and confirm current conditions with the NZ Mountain Safety Council or a local provider rather than relying on general seasonal patterns. Bluff also serves as the crossing point to Stewart Island/Rakiura, worth knowing about if a trip extends that far.
